HOT ENVIRONMENT

People who work in hot environments require special precautions to prevent heat stress.  Hot environments can cause problem like dizziness, weakness and muscle cramps.  Heat can promote irritability, discomfort, frustration and anger.

Here are some suggestions that can help you reduce the risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion while working in hot environments;

·    Wear loose fitting cotton clothes.  They are the best choice because they allow air to circulate and sweat to evaporate.  Synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester feel hotter, because they do not “breathe as cotton fabric does.  Choose light colored clothing.  Light colors reflect more heat than dark colors.

·    When working in the sun, wear good quality dark safety glasses to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays.

·    Drink plenty of water to replenish the water you loose from sweating.  Drink more water than you need to satisfy your thirst.

·    Eat light meals.  Avoid heavy or hot foods that add heat to your body.

·    Know the signs of stress.  If they appear, notify your supervisor and take action quickly, before heat exhaustion or heat stroke develops.

·    Expect to take a week to fully adjust t a new job in a hot environment such as welding shop or any outside job.  Your body should adjust as long as you take sensible precautions.

Take plenty of water…

5 to 7 liters per person per day (24hrs)
