Toolbox 3- Unsafe Acts

by: desertknightfm Rhojel

UNSAFE ACTS CAUSE ACCIDENTS

Studies have shown that people work more efficiently when they feel safe in their working environment. However, safe work environments don’t just happen; they are generated. No matter how thorough and well conceived a safety program is, all employees have to actively support the program or it will not be effective.

You can actively promote and support a safe working environment by being aware of what is going on around you at all times. Many workplace accidents can be avoided if you recognize and correct the following unsafe acts;

·         Unauthorized operation or use of equipment.
·         Failing to secure or tie down equipment against unexpected movement.
·         Operating tools or equipment at unsafe speeds.
·         Failing to warn others or signal intentions as required.
·         Removing or bypassing safety devices such as machine guards.
·         Using defective tools of equipment.
·         Taking an unsafe position or posture.
·         Hitching a ride on hazardous moving equipment.
·         Engaging in horseplay, distracting or startling other employees.
·         Using improper working platform; i.e. drums, unsecured wood planks on scaffold railings or structures.
·         Throwing materials or tools from elevated working areas.
·         Failing to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the job.
·         Working on incomplete working platforms.
·         Accessing on restricted areas or not a proper access.
