  WORKING HABITS

Practically all accidents are due to workers indulging in unsafe habits, which are repeated many times before causing an accident. Prompt action by the supervisor in correcting and eliminating these unsafe acts is the only way to prevent from eventually causing an accident.

Some common practices that result in industrial injuries are:

·       Cleaning machinery without shutting off power.

·       Using makeshift or improper tools. Watch for improvised and field fabricated tools in use. Many are own right dangerous.

·       Using wrong size or type of container.

·       Disconnecting or removing safety guards on machinery.

·       Dismantling or ignoring barricades.

·       Failure to properly dress tools, chisels punches, etc.

·       Neglect of lubrication or cooling

·       Using gasoline in place of non-flammable, non-toxic cleaning solvent.

·       Sub-standard field fabricated ladders and scaffolding, such as one plan, or cracked board, instead of full decking. With intermediate and top railing.

·       Driving too fast for conditions and running stop sign.

·       Unauthorized operation of vehicle s and equipment by untrained personnel.

       To effectively reduce these careless practices, every supervisor should establish his own corrective procedures. We list the following points as a guide; no doubt you will add others tailored to your own specific plan:

·       Make frequent inspections to check conditions and work habit.

·       Keep a record of dangerous practices you observe.

·       Prepare written rules to correct frequent safety breaches.

·       Prominently display, in the language of the workers involved your rules and instructions. Use noticed board.

·       See that each workman understands the instructions.

·       Incorporate safety rules into construction methods.

·       Enforce the rules and investigate all breaches.
