Toolbox 12- Manually Moving Things

by: desertknightfm Rhojel

Did you know that 3 out of 10 accidents causing temporary injury are caused by moving things the wrong way?

Moving things the wrong way may cause:
1.      Strains – stretching a muscle beyond its limits. When you feel pain its too late to do anything about it. The muscle is already injured.
2.      Sprains – weakening of joint and related muscles by sudden or excessive exertion.
3.      Hernias – protrusion of an organ (generally an intestine) due to pulling apart of the body’s muscle lining.
4.      Wounds – cuts and bruises on the hands, fingers, feet or toes.
5.      Fractures – usually caused by jamming fingers from dropping objects on toes.

Most accidents resulting from moving things can be prevented by the following basic safety tips;
1.      Get help – if there is any doubt about your ability… get help.
2.      Wear safety shoes/boots – prevent injuries from dropped objects.
3.      Keep hands in clear – fingers can be crushed or jammed when load is put down or handled carelessly.
4.      Wear gloves – protect against slivers, cuts, scratches, and burns.
5.      Lift with your legs – don’t really “put your back into it.”
6.      Get a good grip – makes carrying easier and safer.

Planning makes any job easier. When you plan before staring, you get the job done easily, quickly, efficiently, and SAFELY. Decide in advance how you are going to do the job. Plan the route you will take. Determine object will be set down. Consider the distance the load is to be moved. Be sure there is enough space to handle the object safely. Use a lift truck, conveyor, etc. for the things not meant to be moved by hand.

Learn the know-how of lifting. Look over the object to be lifted. Make sure it’s no too heavy or too clumsy for good balance. If the object is too heavy, large, long, bulky, try the team lifting – GET HELP – and you’ll get the job done safely and easily every time.

Know yourself. Only you can judge how much you should move. Only you know of physical conditions that might prevent you from moving objects. And if you are over or under weight, have deformities of the spine, previous injuries to joint, or have special medical problems…  BE EXTRA CAREFUL, moving objects can be especially dangerous to you.

“SAFETY IS NEVER AN ACCIDENT; IT IS ALWAYS
THE RESULT OF INTELIGENT EFFORT.”
